THE BEST TIME TO SCHEDULE YOUR MATERNITY PHOTO SESSION
Maternity photos are such a lovely way to both celebrate and document your journey into motherhood. Looking back on photos of this meaningful time in your life is something you’ll definitely cherish, but the experience itself is also special. You get to relax, slow down and enjoy the moment, and spend some quality time connecting with your partner.
New mamas often ask me how far along they should be when they book their maternity photo session. It’s best not too book too early, when when your bump isn’t showing much yet, but you also want to ensure you’re still feeling comfortable and far enough from your ‘due date’ in case bubs arrives early. Each pregnancy is unique, but I’ve found that there is a sweet spot for maternity sessions.
My Recommended Timeframe for Maternity Photography
I recommend booking your maternity photo session after 30 weeks (28 for second or subsequent pregnancies) and before 36 weeks. During this window, you have a beautiful bump – perfect for photos, you’re glowing and feeling your best, and you’re (usually) still comfortably moving around.
How Far in Advance to Book Your Maternity Session
My diary tends to fill up a few months in advance, and busy times of year (summer and autumn in particular) sometimes book up even faster. I recommend getting in touch to book your maternity session after your 12 week scan, or if you’re more comfortable, after your 20 week scan, to ensure you don’t miss the ideal window.
Is After 36 Weeks Too Late for a Maternity Session?
Don’t worry! If you’re a bit further along but still want photos to capture this beautiful season of life, please get in touch. I always try to keep a bit of space available for last-minute maternity photo sessions. I’ll help make sure you look and feel beautiful, no matter how far along you may be.
Should I do maternity photos indoors or outdoors in London?
This depends on the time of year and what you prefer! Outdoor sessions are usually best between April and October, when the London weather and colours outside are preferable. I do run my outdoor maternity sessions in winter, but it’s also great to have an in-home back up at this time of year. In-home maternity sessions are great because we can do them any time of year, and it’s also so special to photograph you in the intimate, beautiful setting of your home as you prepare to welcome your little one to your space.
